Pipe jacking: A technology breakthrough in underground construction
20 Apr 2020

Pipe jacking, also known as microtunneling, has proven to be a real technology breakthrough in underground construction and it is apparent in its increasing popularity among contractors worldwide over the past 30 years.

In essence, pipe jacking is a trenchless method of installing pipelines underneath roads, buildings and more, with minimal disruption to the surface and reduced downtime on its surrounding environment. Apart from manhole works at both ends of the pipeline where the jacking machine is lowered and later removed, most of the works take place beneath the surface.

Based on factors of environmental sustainability and cost savings alone, pipe jacking far outweighed conventional open-trench, cut and cover methods, which perfectly explains why pipe jacking has become the new “normal” for underground pipeline construction.

A wide variety of pipe jacking machines and cutters are available in the market, depending on ground conditions and the size of the pipes required.

JK&T Equipment is the official distributor for RASA pipe jacking machines in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Click here to find out more.

RASA DHD900 for hard soil and rocks

This DHD900 pipe jacking machine for pipe OD of 1200mm is specially built with 2 different cutter disks for Aik Leong Plumbing Construction's upcoming pipe diversion projects in Singapore, each with different ground conditions.

First, the normal cutter disk as installed on the DHD900 will be used for excavating hard soil in an LTA sewer diversion project. Upon completion, it will then be replaced with the rock cutter disk for excavating through rock conditions at Pasir Panjang Road / West Coast Drive area, as part of the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) Phase 2 project.

Machine inspection was done earlier in March and machine has arrived in Singapore. Pipe jacking works were delayed due to our government’s Circuit Breaker measures and will be scheduled to start only after the measures are lifted.
