Pipejacking breakthrough: 960m span, 33m depth

pipejacking 960m breakthrough in singapore

Shingda Construction Pte Ltd has achieved a remarkable pipejacking breakthrough in Singapore’s underground infrastructure development. The company successfully jacked through a single continuous span of 960 metres in length and 33 metres in depth, completing the work within just three months of operations.

This project, part of a Singapore Public Utilities Board (PUB) water pipeline network on Jurong Island, highlights the growing demands on microtunneling contractors to achieve both productivity and precision. With increasing urban density and limited space for open-cut works, trenchless methods such as pipejacking are becoming essential. The record span demonstrates what is possible when advanced technology and dependable support services come together.

Why This Achievement Stands Out

Pipejacking is a trenchless construction method where pipes are hydraulically pushed through the ground. It is widely used for water pipelines, sewer systems, and utility tunnels, as it minimises surface disruption to roads, businesses, and communities. However, as the distance and depth increase, so do the engineering challenges.

  • 960m single span: among the longest achieved locally, requiring careful planning and robust equipment.
  • 33m below ground: deep underground conditions demand stable slurry systems and reliable lubrication to overcome soil pressure.
  • 3 months of continuous jacking: maintaining a steady pace for this length of time demonstrates strong coordination between teams and equipment suppliers.

Such milestones raise the bar for what contractors in Singapore and the region can accomplish, and they also add valuable experience for future projects of similar scale.

Powered by Advanced Pipejacking Technology

To meet these demanding conditions, Shingda deployed a RASA DH 2200mm pipejacking machine equipped with a semi-rock cutter disk, designed for mixed ground conditions often found in deep tunnelling. Supporting systems ensured that excavation and pipe advancement could proceed smoothly and efficiently:

  • 8 units of 200-tonne main jacks delivering the required thrust force.
  • 11 intermediate jacking stations to distribute pressure and enable longer spans.
  • 2 Warman pumps and 5 Toyo intermediate pumps as part of the slurry transportation system, handling excavated material reliably.
  • Automatic Bentonite Lubrication System to reduce friction between the pipes and surrounding soil, lowering jacking forces and protecting equipment.

Together, these systems enabled a consistent jacking rate of around 10 metres per day, which is an impressive pace for a drive of this length and depth.

JK&T: Reliable Partner Every Step of the Way

While advanced machinery was central to the achievement, maintaining performance across three months of non-stop operations required dependable support. This is where JK&T played an important role.

As the trusted distributor of microtunneling and pipejacking equipment, JK&T provided after-sales service and onsite troubleshooting throughout the project. Our engineering and technical teams were available whenever required, ensuring that the machine operated at peak performance and downtime was kept to a minimum.

This collaboration between ShingdaConstructionand JK&T team illustrates how technology, strong teamwork and after-sales support go hand in hand in delivering successful infrastructure projects.

Raising Standards for Future Projects

This record-breaking drive is more than a technical milestone—it sets a new benchmark for Singapore’s microtunneling industry. It shows that with the right combination of:
