Traditional method
In pipejacking, an important factor of efficient and successful jacking is to reduce pipe friction. This is done by manually adding bentonite into the annular space between the outer pipe surface and the ground.
Challenges
The amount of bentonite added is based on estimation, which often leads to wastage or under supply. Also, as pipe jacking machines now cover longer jacking spans of up to 500-700m per span, this manual lubrication process becomes increasingly tedious and labour-intensive.
To further improve worker safety, government authorities have recently mandated the use of automated lubrication system for longer spans or larger diameter pipe jacking projects.
New ABIS method
With the new standalone ABIS system, the supply of bentonite is automated and can be remotely monitored from a touchscreen display in the control room. Valve control module boxes are mounted at intervals of 15-20m in the pipeline. This separates the tunnel into subsections, with each subsection being assigned a specific volume of bentonite to ensure an even distribution of bentonite.
So, what does this mean for pipe jacking operators?

The amount of bentonite and the rate at which it is injected can now be precisely controlled, reducing wastage or under supply of bentonite. An accurate and even distribution of bentonite will be much more effective in reducing friction during jacking operations.
